The son of Nicodemus Tessin the Elder and the father of Carl Gustaf Tessin, Tessin the Younger was the middle-most generation of the brief Tessin dynasty, which have had a lasting influence on Swedish architecture and history. Nicodemus Tessin, the Elder, (born Dec. 7, 1615, Stralsund, Pomerania—died May 24, 1681, Stockholm), most eminent Swedish architect of his period, whose principal work is the Drottningholm palace. Early in his career Tessin worked under the Swedish Royal Architect Simon de la Vallee, whose style remained an important influence. Biography. Nicodemus Tessin was born in Stralsund in Pomerania and came to Sweden as a young man. There he met and worked with the architect Simon de la Vallée.He worked for the Swedish Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna before he travelled for further studies to Germany, Italy, France and in the Netherlands, where he got to know the new Baroque style in architecture. The castle was designed by architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder. When Wrangel died, the castle passed into the hands of the Brahe family, and then, after 1930, became the property of the von Essens.
